Atu forms near Vanuatu

Atu has rapidly formed very close to the island nation of Vanuatu. At the moment it is a very powerful storm, still hanging close to the islands. The GFS forecast currently sends the storm off to the southwest, passing through the channel that separates New Caledonia and Fiji. Rough surf will be common through all of these islands, especially as the storm is very likely to continue to strengthen. Significant damage should be limited to Vanuatu, although light damage will be possible elsewhere. No landfall is currently expected with this storm, however it will be remaining close to Vanuatu for the next 24 - 36 hours. Heavy rain, high winds and rough surf should be expected.
